Dear mouse,
Malu Fernandez writes again.
It ain’t over although the Fat Lady already sung. It seems the song was not an aria but a scream. The apology was not because she was humbled but she was afraid of the LYNCH MOB, that’s referring to the bloggers. This was the message she texted to Cheche Lazaro when she refused to appear in the the ABS-CBN News Channel show, “Media in Focus”.
I do not believe that the commenters in the blogs would make good their threats of lynching her. Life is too precious to waste for a bigot person. But I do believe that other threats warnings like what waiters or OFW’s relatives in the hotel, hospitality and service industries can do to revenge is not impossible to happen. Liquid stuff put in a soup is not very discernible, Mr. Watson. What if this ” special service” is extended to MST staff as well? Just thinking loud.
So Nick renewed the call to boycott Manila Standard. Suprisingly, I am for it NOW.
Why? The Manila Standard management brought it to themselves.
At first, I was not for the boycott because I was concerned for the other innocent employees of the publication who may be affected but the silence and the inaction of MST to their lapse of judgement in allowing an article that does not only insult OFWs but also people who’s below the writer’s socio-economic status (remember her statement about ukay-ukay users) makes me feel angry. And you won’t like me when I am angry. I turned into a HULK. *heh*
Yes, I wrote in my article that management should observe due prudence in dismissing their employees based on full complaints box or hate mails. BUT HONEY, the RESIGNATION LETTER WAS SUBMITTED and all the management has to do is to accept it without the Pilate-washing-of-the-hands-ceremony.
I cannot even say that the columnist is too important a writer to lose. The article about the
cosmetics and the perfume things is merely a justification of her endorsing a low end cosmetic proucts and insulting cheap perfume/cologne wearing OFWs an poor people who use the perfume-scented-magazine page.
But don’t be a label whore when it comes to makeup because as I said all the chemicals are basically the same. Don’t be afraid to try out cheap drugstore brands. You may find some things that you actually like. And for those of you on a budget don’t feel bad if you’re buying a cheaper brand than the one you really want. They just differ in packaging anyway, it’s all the same.
That’s true for perfume. As I have said, I was once involved in cologne and perfume-making on a small scale and I import the FRAGRANCE from Paris thru my chemist who’s my consultant. The fragrances made for Ralph Lauren and the other brands come from the same scents. It is the mixing with other fragrances that make the different smell.
The patented molds for the cosmetics and perfumes are used over and over in the production so practically the cost of the packaging becomes nil as there are more production because the total cost has been spread out per unit.
The costliest perfume is Imperial Majesty, which costs $215,000 a bottle.
Sold simply as No. 1, the fragrance is priced at $2,150 an ounce. The reason Imperial Majesty costs so much is because there were only five Baccarat crystal bottles produced with a five-carat idiamond in its 18-carat gold collar filled with 16.9 ounce fragrance.
Otherwise, even her cologne and perfume don’t belong to the niche perfumes and therefore are recognizable when she walks down the street. It is not even perfume because it does not fall under PARFUMS which is the high end perfume because of high concentration of fragrance and the rarity of scent used such as ylang-ylang.
What she was saying about the cosmetics is totally a disservice to women who know nothing about cosmetics.
The reason for the price difference is the ingredient. I invest in cosmetics or make-up that would not make me look like like a horror character in a movie just because it does not contain water resistant and wear-it-24-hour ingredients. The cheap cosmetics also use substitute ingredients that may result to skin rashes and premature skin sagging.
I would not miss her articles which are just promotions for products that she endorses for freebies. Isn’t it that’s the reason why bloggers refuse to get freebies from some companies because of endorsements of products which they can not promote in their blogs due to ethical reasons.
Want to join us? Now let’s see who are really sincere in helping the OFW’s plight.

Let us also boycott shows like Wowowee that shows women almost naked during lunchtime when kids at home sees such dance movements that should only be shown late night> I am one Fil-Am that has no TFC and has had no cable for the almost 12 years that I have been living here in San Francisco. When I went home, 80% of what I’ve seen on local tvs were junk programs except for the investigative reports such as Imbestigador. I grew up watching Batibot, Lunch Date, Lovingly Yours Helen, Sesame Street, Bionic Woman, House on the Prairie, and a lot of other American shows that are clean such as the Ann Margret show, Donnie & Marie, and Carol Burnett. I’ve noticed that the proficiency of children in the English language have gone way, way down since all they hear are young movie stars who can not even talk straight English, just all trying to be cure and being irresponsible to the viewing children in their formative years.
There should be parental control option in the cable in the Philippines. I do not know if they have that.
correction:
just all trying to be CUTE and being irresponsible to the viewing children in their formative years. I was not able to watch the cable channels when I was there, I was out everyday, I only saw a glimpse of the local shows and these TV stations have disregarded the Filipino cultures and values to get the highest ratings possible so that more businesses will be advertised during airing.
I’ve posted a couple of noteworthy news at Vox Populi this morning but I guess they took it out, one was the MSNBC article taking out Don Imus Program last April 2007, and the second was the article that they posted at todays Inquirer re Blogger calling for boycott, hhhmmm, were my posting inappropriate?
Cathy, thank you for joining the boycott. Just a note, the old code was broken, you may need to recopy it.
Lorena,
I myself cannot understand why I cannot find my comments in the Vox Populi.
Aba, I am surprised at this, but I guess the line I quoted touched off your whiskers. LOL.
Nick,
I already did.
I joined the crusade…boycott Manila Standard
Jon,
I did not think that statement was to amend her ways. It was more of creating the impression that she knows a lot about her topic . Sadly, she is not.
Take it from me who is using Estee Lauder instead of the low end cosmetics that she is endorsing in one of her columns. Then there is the ethnicity to consider. What may be good for brown race may not be good for Caucasians. It’s because of the pigmentations.
My Recipes for Beauty offers more about cosmetics than her column.
Well the Lynch Mob is having a fun and easy time going after a bush league paper like the manila standard. But let’s get to the root of the matter, shall we. Who and where could a person like Malu have gotten the idea that OFWs are lil more than toiletbowl cleaners of the world?
Bet all you brave bloggers wouldn’t dare…
Dean,
I have that entry Toilet Bowl Cleaners by Quiroz
Ako rin yata ang sumulat in defense of OFWs.
