Burma, Blogs and Traditional Media

Dear mouse,

Analyn Jusay has mentioned in her discussion about blogs in the PR Congress that bloggers are slowly becoming alternative to traditional media, I say, specially when there is a clamp down on the mainstream media.

Just like our own People Power in 1986, Radyo Bandido, the voice of freedom for the protesters rose from the ashes of Radyo Veritas to continue broadcasting and rally people amidst the gagged controlled radio, TV networks and print media by the dictatorial government of Marcos, a BLOG from BURMA is now written in English to report on the daily happenings in that country where people are silenced by bullets. You can also view the latest pictures.

Burmese people are fighting for democracy. Even the monks sworn to silence and humility came out from monasteries in full force to lead a peaceful demonstration.

But the government took control of the streets again by sealing off Buddhist monasteries, apprehending about two hundred monks and firing to the protesters as warning shots. AND TO ISOLATE THEM FROM THE WORLD THEM, THE MILITARY JUNTA CUT THE PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE INTERNET.

This is the message from the blogger.

Dear All,

I sadly announce that the Burmese military junta has cut off the internet connection throughout the country. I therefore would not be able to feed in pictures of the brutality by the brutal Burmese military junta.

I will also try my best to feed in their demonic appetite of fear and paranoia by posting any pictures that I receive though other means (Journos!! please don’t ask me what other means would be??). I will continue to live with the motto that “if there is a will there is a way”.

We probably need to lobby the Chinese government or UN envoy to Burma to ask the junta to switch on the Internet. Please!

UPdate: Internet is back but the military junta may be tracking Burmese people who access the BLOGGER without a bypass.

The Ca t

Marami din akong nabasa na mga articles nnna ang mga bloggers ay nahatulan ng bitay sa Singapore, this should not happen nowadays, nasa modern world na tayo. there is no perfect world pero I’m still looking for more positive news and I will not lose hope, it might not happen in my lifetime but maybe someday someone will read what happened in our time and that will be a lesson for them.

medyo sumusunod na din tayo sa kalakaran ng Americano na pumupunta sa shrink, one of my friends informed me they took one of their child to the shrink, paid Pesos2,000 for the first visit, only the parents were interviewed. When I spoke to them, sabi ko payong kaibigan, this is just stress, I’m pretty sure there is too much competition the child is experiencing at school. nothing serious, it will pass, pinagdaanan ko din yan sa aking anak na meron siyang mga moods na minsan hindi ko maintindihan. I’ll be following up next week what happened, if the child is now more relaxed. In the neighborhood montessori, they told me that about 3 kids have committed suicide.

    lorena,
marami raw lan silang pera magagastos kaya dala nila sa psychiatrist. generally, our kids are well-adjusted personality-wise.

I am referring to the adults too na mas maraming disorders dito dahil sa walang masyadong makausap. People are all busy.

I must have been out from the Philippines for a long time that I am out of touch.

Drug related kaya. I do not think it is depression. Kids do not get depressed easily with their body metabolism, they are always on the go.

This could have been a big news.

I’ve seen a big change in the attitude of the kids when I went home last Dec, I was away for 11 years. They have acquired the commercialism personality dahil all day long nakatutok sila sa junk tv. The suicide in the Montessori is not a chismis, it was the neighborhood M’ssori in my friends subdivision. Maybe in 1999 my next door neighbor daughter committed suicide, she was just in her early 20′s.

There was a news just last week (TV Patrol) that a girl accidentally fell down from the balcony and died but some are saying that the student was stressed. The school was in the Malate area.

Actually, my friend is living a very modest means, she is a freelancer selling insurance and her husband is a stay at home dad to take care of the kids. but she have become very concerned and she asked her child what do they need to do and the child answered her Mom to bring her to the doctor. She has been pulling her hair and needs a lot of attention. I told her that my daughter had the same phase wwhen she was growing up, there are days that she wouldn’t go down from her bunk bed, would’nt talk to anyone, she will just read books or play her flute.

  6. Cathy says:

    Lorena,

They can easily get out of depressive states.

Your friend may just be consulting and it is not the regular shrink-patient consultation dito where prozac and other calming medications are needed. it is when a patient needed someone to talk to in times of depression or anxiety.

Depression here is prevalent because of the seasons as well as the lack of family ties where members of family are not available to talk to.

  7. Lorena C. Marzan says:

the 20 yr old something is a separate incident, I will e-mail you as soon as I confirmed the facts but I don’t think the kids will lie to me with re to the 3 suicides in theeir neigborhood school.. Ca T, I really think that a lot have changed, just analyze the way christine ignacio wrote on your comments page, I sense an impatience and desperation in the way she asked you, i was flabbergasted, wala man lamang “po” sa kanyang sentence dahil demanding ang tone niya. I even googled who she was but I am not really sure of the match, I’ve read the tread where I found her name and the way they were conversing seems like they have not learned anything in school, their grammar, their expression is very limited.

And even my village priest preached about this during the Christmas mass, how the family have changed. I’ve noticed when I am watering my plants at about 6:30am in the morning in Anabu, that the fathers take out the kids for the sunshine and they stay outside for almost 2 hours chatting with the other fathers with their kids in the neighborhood. There was even an article that DSWd has found cases wherein girls are being raped by their own fathers since they have become the surrogate mothers since their mothers have gone abroad.
