History of Strongest Earthquakes in Pakistan and India

Dear mouse,

Washington Postreports 30,000 dead in the recent earthquake in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

It’s been almost more than a year that I’ve researched about earthquakes and tsunamis but mainly centered in Indonesia.

The following table shows the history of strongest earthquakes in Pakistan-India, as to the date/year, region, intensity and fatalities.

Date   Location   Intensity   Fatalities
893 – 894 A.D   Debal, Pakistan   7.5   150,000 Casualties
2 May 1668   Shahbunder   7.6   No information
16 June 1819   Allahbund, Indo-Pak Border region   7.5   3,200
26 September 1827   Near Lahore   No information   1,000
20 October 1909   Between Loralai and Sibi   7.0   100
1 February 1929   Between Buner and Hazara   8.0   No information
25 August 1931   Sharigh   7.2   no information
27 August 1931   Baluchistan   7.0   No information
27 August 1931   Quetta, Balochistan   8.1   30,000
27 November 1945   Makran Coast   7.9   2,000
5 August 1947   Makran Coast   7.2   No information
28 December 1974   Malakhand   6.2   5,000
30 December 1983   H. Afghanistan   7.4   no information
29 July 1985   Hindukush, Afghanistan   7.4   no information
9 August 1993   Hindukush, Afghanistan   7.0   no information
27 February 1997   - Near Harnai (Baluchistan), Pakistan   7.3   50
26 January 2001   Near Bhachau (Gujarat), India   7.6   11,500

The strongest earthquake recorded in Pakistan after the most devastating earthquake in early centuries was in 1931 when temblor of 8.1 magnitude killed 30,000 people in Quetta, Balochistan.

Since India was a part of Pakistan before they were split into two independent countries, it is not surprising to see that earthquakes affect the region together with Afghanistan.

The most destructive earthquake in India was in 2001 where more than 11,000 died. Earthquake was measured at 7.6.

So after more than half a decade, another earthquake claimed more than 30,000
lives in Pakistan in October, 2005 at an intensity of 7.6.

I have a very bad experience with earthquakes. When I was still in grade school, me and my sister got caught in a large tremor inside a movie house. it was a good thing that we were at the balcony. There was a stampede in the orchestra and it was truly devastating.

I hope we never get to experience a catastrophe like what happened in Pakistan.
