Supersize Food Servings

Dear mouse,
I am not referring to the food servings in the restaurants, mousey. They’re becoming “minime” as the businesses cut down on cost. Time will come when you need to bring a magnifier to find your sandwich. Sound of clicking noise in the cash register. ringringring.

I am referring to these animals which grew in large size that the food chain may be reversed…instead of humans eating them, it will be the other way around.

Just take a look at my swimming cousin, the catfish. This was seven foot, seven inches long catfish that was caught in Spain.

The men who caught it simply burped it for the air it inhaled and then was released into the water.
It is only here in the United States where I ate catfish. I grew up in a place which is bounded by China Sea and Pacific Ocean that there’s plenty of “white fish” that the fishermen could catch with their nets and fishing boats. Our catfishes are colored black and mostly lived in brackish water. There were even rumors that they hibernate in cemeteries during dry season and come back in the river thru floodwater during wet season. Yikes. We’ve got two seasons only; the dry and the wet.

Squid

This was a 1,091 pound- Collosal Squid caught in New Zealand in February 2007. It measured 10 meters in length.

One of my favorite seafoods whether canned or fresh cooked in garlic and ginger is squid. I prefer those pregnant ones with eggs inside.

With this size, I hate to see what’s inside the squid. Nyek.

Wild Pig

This is a 992 pound- wild pig caught in Alabama. You can see how huge it was because it dwarfed that young man standing behind its body.

My grandparents were supplied by hunters with meats of wild pigs, deer and other wild animals in exchange for soap, sugar, rice and other products available in their outback variety store. The only one in that remote area in Bicol.

Since there was . no electricity in that area at that time.. I do not know now…the meat was preserved by smoking them atop the earthen stove. The meat did not usually last song…not because it became spoiled. My grandpa was very friendly and generous especially when he’s drunk with tuba, that the drinking buddies came evey night for the wine and the meat served as “pulutan”.

If ever they caught the pig, this size, the whole barrio was going to have a week long festival.
Masaya. There would be singing naughty songs and exchange of dirty jokes. Don’t ask. My grandpa, as I have written before used to give me one shot of the tuba before their drinking session.

Small amount of the fermented coconut extract is good for the health.

Drinking too much intoxicates.
